Tunisia’s Office National de Télédiffusion (ONT) Selects Grass Valley for Digital Terrestrial Television Deployment
Grass Valley™ today announced that leading Tunisian broadcaster Office National de Télédiffusion (ONT) has selected Thomson’s digital terrestrial television (DTTV) solutions from Grass Valley for the digitization of its network. The deployment will cover both the distribution and the transmission network with 17 digital transmission sites spread out across the entire Tunisian territory.
The set-up and rollout of ONT’s new digital television network is expected to be completed within the next 12 months and will include turnkey compression, transmission, and network management systems from Grass Valley.
ONT’s choice of an MPEG-4 compression platform for network distribution will play a key role in the ongoing digitization of its network, ONT prides itself on being a prime mover in the adoption of future high-definition TV and new multimedia services in Africa. The initial framework includes preliminary site surveys and site coverage studies which are key for a reliable system deployment.
The ONT system that will be deployed in the 17 DVB-T transmission sites includes MPEG-4 headend platforms equipped with ViBE encoders, NetProcessor 9030 MPEG processors, Jade EPG servers, as well as transmission systems equipped with Thomson branded Elite 100, 1000 medium- and high-power transmitters enhanced by passive reserve redundancy, auxiliaries, and antennas. The system compatibility for these 17 network transmission sites is guaranteed by Grass Valley, who will also deploy the XMS™ eXtensible Management System for complete network management of the entire headend and transmission system.
“We are delighted to have been chosen once again by ONT for their transmission needs as they now roll out DTTV service in Tunisia,” said Jeff Rosica, Senior Vice President of Grass Valley. “ONT has trusted us in the past for its analog TV and international shortwave transmission networks, and our assurance that we were able to provide the best quality of service combined with a reduced cost of ownership for the transmitters for minimal on-site intervention was what sealed the deal for Grass Valley.”

About Office National de Télédiffusion (ONT)
Office National de Télédiffusion (ONT) is the leading operator for the deployment and operation of television and radio broadcast networks in Tunisia. Since 2001, ONT has successfully deployed a DVB-T-compliant digital terrestrial TV pilot project using MPEG-2 compression and covering the area of “Grand Tunis.”
